FM Alex Salmond Visits Scott & Fyfe

Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond visited Scott & Fyfe on Friday 19th April to meet the employees and learn more about the Textile Industry Market. He was delighted to be taken on a tour around the factory meeting many members of staff. He then meet with a large group of our employees for a Question and Answer session. Seven employees had the opportunity to ask questions which ranged from topics on off shore wind farms, education and Scottish independence. The first minister told the workforce he was determined that Scotland's fledgling green energy industry would have as wide an economic impact on the country as possible, and said there would be opportunities in the supply chain for businesses such as Scott & Fyfe.

Alex Salmond had the opportunity to speak with the chairman of the company Nick Kuenssberg. He commented, "We used to be really traditional and had a super business, but that was based upon markets that just aren't there any more - and if we hadn't gone down this route, we would have been dead by now."

The FM commented, "There is a lot of goodwill here for a company that has been knocking around for 150 years."

David Nicoll, Development Technician spoke to Alex Salmond about the developments of the irrigation business unit, to which the was very impressed,

"The irrigation (product) strikes me as an absolute cracker - as a technology, a product and a design. It is going to allow people with hardly any water to irrigate their crops."

Employee's also discussed the recent handover from a privately owned business to employee ownership. He said the change to employee ownership had transformed the business and they were now looking ahead with renewed confidence and exploring opportunities in renewables, irrigation, the automotive industry, pipelines and the oil and gas sector.

Scott & Fyfe Open Day

On Saturday 23 rd of February Scott & Fyfe held an Open Day for friends and family to visit their New Innovation Space and Museum. Roughly 170 people were in attendance and the day consisted of many ‘fun-filled’ activities for children and adults alike with an opportunity to tour the factory allowing children and adults to see what their loved ones job roles entailed and ask questions of the tour guides. There was also face painting, a magician and many other exciting games and competitions.

The day also gave employees an opportunity to explain (to friends and family) the recent move to Employee Ownership and the impact it will have on Scott & Fyfe. Employee Ownership puts the control of company success into the employees’ hands. In order to prosper the team have to work together and therefore the support of family, friends and the community is extremely important.

The day was a real success with lots of fantastic feedback and happy faces. We also held a raffle, cake and candy and bottle stall. This raised a fantastic £285.00 which is being donated to The National Autistic Society Scotland.

Scott & Fyfe Becomes Employee Owned

After months of discussion and consultation within the family and the board, supported by Co-operative Development Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and specialist consultants Baxi Partnership, the dramatic decision was announced in September 2012 to the 100 employees of the company that Scott & Fyfe was moving to employee ownership. As of January 2013 the company was officially owned by the employees of the company after a £5.8 million move from family ownership.

Nick Kuenssberg, chairman, said; “The move by the Tough family is to be welcomed; this development will help to underwrite an exciting future for the company and its employees”.

The Tough family will sell all their shares to a newly established Scott & Fyfe Employee Benefit Trust which will always own a majority of the ordinary shares. Richard and David Tough will reinvest the bulk of their proceeds in redeemable preference capital which will be paid out over a period of years. In parallel a Share Incentive Plan will be set up to facilitate the issue and sale of shares to individual employees. Employees will each receive a one-off award of shares.

In this way only current employees and the Employee Benefit Trust will be ordinary shareholders in the company. All employees will be shareholders and will have the opportunity of building a packet of shares over the years which can be cashed in when they leave the company. Allowing existing employees to hold shares puts control in the hands of the people who will be most committed to making it succeed.

John Lupton, chief executive, commented: “With the right teamwork we can be entitled to a share of the profits, with the right attitude we can add real value and with the right effort we can go out and make it happen. It is a new dawn for everyone at Scott and Fyfe and it is up to us to seize this opportunity.”

Employees voted on an employee director, two trustees and two new members for the forum in an election. They elected John Palmer as employee director, Lesley Bayne and Ronnie McVicar as Employee Trustees and Rod Swan and Bob Tate onto the Employee Forum. This combination of employee involvement and employee ownership will contribute to the future success of the company and will provide opportunities for employees to build a long term stake in the company.

Opening of Scott & Fyfe Innovation Space & Museum

by John Swinney

Tayport based technical textiles business Scott & Fyfe Limited celebrated today the official opening of its new Innovation Space and Museum.

John Swinney MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion in a ceremony attended by Scott & Fyfe staff, customers and partners.

The custom-designed innovation space and museum within an industrial space were developed in conjunction with interior design students from The Glasgow School of Art. This exciting move represents one of the biggest developments in the company’s history. All company staff are now based on one site at Tayport Works; as well as all production and administration the site now includes the Innovation Space which houses individual team pods (business units), a conceptual product development tree, product display areas, a cinema/ presentation space, flexible meeting areas and the company Museum.

Nick Kuenssberg, chairman said: “The Museum looks back into the company’s 148 year history and provides the heritage on which the company’s ethos of change and customer care is built. The Innovation Space looks forward to a cross-cutting partnership between staff, customers, suppliers and other technology partners and the promotion of the new innovation-led strategy.”

With an innovation and export-led strategy at its core, Scott & Fyfe supply a wide range of technical textiles to a number of markets worldwide; new product ideas are the lifeblood of the company. The pod-based structure at the heart of their activities is the novel creative way of working which allows the company to operate with low overheads and increased speed to market. This culture creates a novel working environment that is both inspirational and valuable; it has been developed as a result of the Glasgow School of Art/ Institute of Directors project to embed sustainable innovation in Scottish SMEs financed by the Scottish Funding Council,

“It is imagining tomorrow and making it happen today, safe in the knowledge that we are dynamic, empowered and flexible enough to adapt to the ever changing needs of current and new markets” stated chief executive, John Lupton.

One of the few survivors of the Tayside jute industry, Scott & Fyfe has continued to evolve over the years through a commitment to reinvestment in the latest technologies and structures.

Following the global recession which led to radical reorganisation and restructuring, the company has developed its new innovation-led strategy in conjunction with a number of partners including Scottish Enterprise, BMC Global Services and The Glasgow School of Art.

The company recently announced the move from family to employee ownership, supported by Co-Operative Development Scotland. This transformation will be completed by the end of the year with the establishment of an employee benefit trust to buy out the existing family shareholders. Together with the renovations Scott & Fyfe will have a very bright and innovative future.

Scott & Fyfe Welcomes Employee Ownership

Scott & Fyfe Limited, the Tayport based technical textiles business that is currently family owned, has announced that it is to transform itself into an employee owned company.

Mr Scott & Mr Fyfe started a linen works in 1864 and the company is now one of the few survivors of the Tayside jute industry. It reinvented itself in the 1960s through the early replacement of jute with polypropylene and ongoing commitment to reinvestment in the latest technologies under the chairmanship of Hamish Tough who retired in 2009.

New chairman Professor Nick Kuenssberg and the new chief executive John Lupton, recruited in 2010, introduced a number of significant changes to ensure a profitable professionally managed business with an innovation and export led strategy at its core, the benefits of which have been recognised by the family.

Hamish and his sons Richard and David, the latter both current directors of the company, represent the family owners. They have decided that the long term sustainability of the company will be best served by building on this new strategy and also moving to employee ownership.

After months of discussion and consultation within the family and the board, supported by Co-operative Development Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and specialist consultants Baxi Partnership, this dramatic decision was announced to the 100 employees of the company with a detailed presentation on 13 September.

The family will sell all their shares to a newly established Scott & Fyfe Employee Benefit Trust which will always own a majority of the ordinary shares. Richard and David Tough will reinvest the bulk of their proceeds in redeemable preference capital which will be paid out over a period of years.

In parallel a Share Incentive Plan will be set up to facilitate the issue and sale of shares to individual employees. Employees will each receive a one-off award of shares, 5% of the annual profit in shares and will have the opportunity to buy shares each year. Additionally senior employees will benefit from the issue of share options which will vest on satisfaction of demanding performance criteria.

In this way only current employees and the Employee Benefit Trust will be ordinary shareholders in the company. All employees will be shareholders and will have the opportunity of building a packet of shares over the years which can be cashed in when they leave the company. Under employee ownership legislation there are significant tax advantages for employees under these schemes which make such shares even more attractive.

Employees will have the right to elect an employee director of the company and to vote at the annual general meeting. They will also elect two trustees for the Employee Benefits Trust and will see the rights of the existing Employee Forum enhanced.

This combination of employee involvement and employee ownership will contribute to the future success of the company and will provide opportunities for employees to build a long term stake in the company.

Nick Kuenssberg, chairman, said; “The move by the Tough family is to be welcomed; this development will help to underwrite an exciting future for the company and its employees”.

Richard Tough added: “This whole process is complicated and will take time, but we as a family are fully committed to it and look forward to making it work for all concerned, the employees, the company and the Tayport community.”

Sarah Deas, chief executive of Co-operative Development Scotland, welcomed this announcement: “We have been working since January with Scott & Fyfe and are delighted to see the company recognise the benefits of employee ownership and follow through with such an ambitious programme”.

“Creating Cultures for Innovation”

Scott & Fyfe have recently started a collaboration with The Glasgow School of Art in order to create a culture of sustainable innovation.

A cross-functional team of 13 Scott & Fyfe employees called NOW. (New Opportunities Within) will take part in 13 design innovation workshops delivered monthly in the form of 2-day workshops over a 6-month period.

The first workshop took place on 19th and 20th October in the Centre for Design Innovation in Forres. The first 2 days went over how the design process can be applied to maximise opportunity spotting. The methods will be used within the organisation to contribute to how Scott & Fyfe commercialise New Product Ideas.

John Lupton, Chief Executive said “At Scott and Fyfe we are very proud of our legacy of customer service and new product delivery. Today's dynamic and highly connected global market place accelerates the need for faster, cheaper, better products and services. Our competitors are tougher, smarter, and better equipped than ever before, and they will only improve in future.

As a small, proactive business, we cannot become a "me too" player. We have to beat them at OUR own game, and the name of that game is "innovation". Innovation distinguishes the leader from the follower.

Innovation only comes when Ideas meet Implementation: This is where the NOW team come into their own.

The team's clear remit is to drive market led, researched, insightful, ideas through the organisation.

With slowly diminishing sales of our heritage products, change must come. It must come NOW.”

Scott & Fyfe Limited and Flemings Textiles Limited working to meet the requirements of REACH

Scott & Fyfe Limited and Flemings Textiles Limited have launched a project team dedicated to assuring our customers that we will comply with REACH legislation.

REACH is a European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals. It came into force on 1st June 2007 and replaces a number of European Directives and Regulations with a single system.

It puts the onus on business to show that the chemicals it uses are safe. It is also meant to encourage the replacement of hazardous chemicals with safer ones and to spur the chemicals sector into researching and developing more new products.

A major part of REACH is the requirement for manufacturers or importers of substances to register them with a central European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) A registration package will be supported by a standard set of data on that substance. The amount of data required is proportionate to the amount of substance manufactured or supplied.

As we are mainly “downstream users” of chemicals, we have contacted all of our raw material suppliers to ensure that they are aware of REACH requirements, and that they intend to meet the requirements of REACH.

On April 1-3, 2008, Paris was the world’s capital for composite materials. The JEC Composites Show was a phenomenal success, with a record turnout and greatly expanded exhibit area. Its 43,500 m² (462,848 sq ft) included no fewer than seven halls, a new outdoor demonstration area, and a specially-built auditorium/conference-room structure.
The Show has developed steadily for the past ten years, with a marked acceleration in its growth since 2005. It drew to a close this year registering an exceptional participation rate for all its programmes.

The Show hosted 1,053 exhibitor companies, with 74% from abroad. More than 100 new companies joined the exhibition, mainly from Europe where JEC Show is the strongest exhibition. The number of visitors reached +27,000 professionals, from 96 different countries with a +13% increase at the pick. One out of two visitors was a buyer or end-user seeking new solutions for aeronautical, marine, automotive, construction, infrastructure, energy, or sports & leisure applications.

At the JEC Composites Show this year, Scott & Fyfe Ltd/ Flemings Textiles Ltd were exhibiting laminate examples where POLYMAT “Hi-Flow” can offer significant benefits when utilised within a structural laminate application such as wind turbine blades or boat deck and hull production.

Through the incorporation of POLYMAT “Hi-Flow” into the laminate lay up:

•  The cycle time of the infusion process can be decreased significantly, allowing for faster more efficient laminations.
•  The unique design of the core provides a path of low resistance to the resin, facilitating a more uniform and reliable infusion – reducing potential for remedial work such as ‘dry’ spots.
•  The core offers a consistent level of compression resistance, offering a final laminate with greater dimensional control and quality of finished part.
•  It is possible to achieve resin savings, resulting in reduced part weight, resin cost savings and reduced styrene emissions – helping the environment.
•  Several core options are available to ensure an optimum solution for each individual application, with cores ranging in thickness, weight and resistance to compression.

Flemings Textiles Ltd also had on display current product ranges including POLYMAT “Hi-Flow” , T-RIM, woven rovings, stitch woven combination fabrics and unidirectional woven combination fabrics as well as new core developments for excellent surface finish.

Trends in worker exposure to styrene in the European GRP industry

The first comprehensive study into long-term styrene exposure of personnel working in the composites industry has been carried out in Europe. The report discusses that the average styrene concentration in the breathing zone of open mould workers in the European GRP industry has decreased on average 3.3% per year over the period 1967-2002.

However advances in processing technologies and technological advances have brought new closed moulding techniques, such as vacuum resin infusion, that significantly reduce emissions of styrene. In addition to these environmental advantages, closed mould techniques mean added benefits in terms of improved consistency, mechanical properties, surface quality and production speed. Closed moulding is therefore becoming more widespread, especially in industries such as boat building, where large hull and deck moulds are used.

Flemings Textiles Ltd/ Scott & fyfe Ltd demonstrate cost reductions in RTM, RTM Light, VARTM or Vacuum Infusion Processes at JEC 2006

Following the launch 2 years ago at the JEC Composites Show, Paris, POLYMAT Hi-Flow has grown from strength to strength in providing a solution for controlled infusion with a wide range of resin formulations .

At the JEC Show this year, Flemings Textiles Ltd were demonstrating successful infusions using POLYMAT Hi-Flow of highly filled resins including up to 60% chalk and 10% micro spheres (by weight). The opportunity to incorporate such high filler levels allows the processor to make significant resin savings and hence significant cost savings. Other benefits include:

  • Reduced shrinkage and improved functionality (such as flame retardancy with ATH).
  • Up to 50% time saving on infusion cycle
  • The ability to utilise high levels of fillers such as Chalk (calcium carbonate), ATH and micro spheres.
  • The ability to handle high viscosity resins and still achieve efficient part fill.
  • Ease of flow and fill for very large mouldings
  • Excellent control over finished part thickness
  • A high degree of fabric deformability providing excellent conformability to complex moulds.
  • Reduced styrene emissions through use of less resin.

The use of micro spheres is quite a novel concept to the FRP industry as these low-density spheres displace a significant volume of resin for a relatively low weight addition. For 10% by weight addition of micro spheres into standard unsaturated polyester resin with a density of 1200Kg/m³, typical volume displacement would be in the region of 38% and a final density of 830Kg/m³, that's almost 40% weight reduction and resin saving!

This has been a key advantage in the manufacture of boat parts above the water line where weight is critical to stability and performance.

Other opportunities include:

  • Moulded parts where weight reduction would be advantageous
  • Wind turbine housings
  • Transportation components
  • Lightweight architectural mouldings

So, if you are looking for a closed mould fabric that will offer speed of infusion along with options on cost effective resin combinations, then POLYMAT Hi-Flow is the product for you.

Scott & Fyfe Launch Development In New Innovation Of Stitch Bonded Loop Fabric At IFAI Show, San Antonio, Texas

Following on from Scott & Fyfe's success in innovative textiles, the IFAI Show in San Antonio, Texas will see the launch of two new developments in stitch bonded loop fabric.

Exhibiting for the first time in the USA, Scottish company, Scott & Fyfe will demonstrate to the US. Market why they are true international players in innovative textiles and technology.

Two new products that will be launched at the show are developments from their current range of stitch-bonded fabrics.

The first fabric, a very lightweight stitch bonded nonwoven is semi transparent in appearance but still allows for good peel and shear properties when used in conjunction with hooks.

We have stitch bonded a very lightweight non woven with polyester yarns to produce loops. Through market research and customer contacts along with our investment in design and development we have worked on refining the number of loops per inch along with refining the specification of the fabric to provide compatibility of the fabric with most hooks used in this market.   With this product we can then allow for fine tuning that will be needed to provide maximum benefit to our customers needs. Says Sales Manager, Stewart Liddell

The second fabric sees the introduction of elastomeric yarns into a lightweight non-woven which when relaxed pulls the non-woven into a crepe like material. Both these fabrics are suitable for medical applications and can be laminated to films or other secondary substrates and made up to 4.5 metres wide.

Scott & Fyfe will be demonstrating their full range of industrial and technical textiles that cover a variety of markets on Booth 7130.

Flemings Textiles Limited Has Busiest Month Ever

Last month Flemings Textiles Ltd had their busiest month ever in the companies' history. Following the increase in sales in all sectors of their business, Flemings is showing that they really are at the forefront of innovative textile technology for the composites industry.

The range of reinforcement fabrics manufactured by Flemings Textiles Ltd are engineered to meet the stringent requirements for the most demanding of manufacturing techniques and applications required by customers while providing cost effective solutions in obtaining the specified mechanical performance.

Following the launch of Polymat Hi-Flow' at JEC earlier this year, enquiries and sales for this product have been received from customers worldwide. Great interest and excitement has been shown for this new reinforcement mat which was designed for the infusion process and which has proven to provide reduced resin fill time by up to 50% even when highly filled resins are used.

The launch of this product has coincided with a time when many companies are moving from hand lay-up techniques to closed mould infusion, the benefits of which include:

  • Significant reduction of styrene emissions
  • Reduced manufacturing costs
  • Improved product quality

This trend toward closed mould processing has undoubtedly created a global demand for Polymat Hi-Flow'. However, this has only partially contributed to the record level of output seen last month and the overall demand for high performance textiles for the composite industry definitely seems to be on the up says David Carter, Business Manager at Flemings Textiles Ltd.

Whatever the reason for increased demand of composite fabrics one thing is clear is that the future definitely looks bright for Flemings Textiles Limited.

Tests At Plastech Prove Polymat Hi-Flow As New Breakthrough In Glass Mat

Plastech T.T. an innovative and dynamic company specialising in the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) field of composites processing have been running trials on our Polymat Hi-Flow to see if it lives up to the claims made by ourselves.

Tests were conducted under Light RTM test injections using a multi cavity mould at Plastech's new Technology Centre in Cornwall.

Test Equipment and Procedures

It was most important to ensure that there was no possibility of error during the tests, so the mould and the machinery were set up with the precise flow, pressure and volume control and logging systems.

The recently introduced PVSensor system designed and manufactured by Plastech was employed to control the tests and provided a simple and highly effective way of confirming the flow characteristics of the new mat.

Observations and Results

Test 1

Using our Polymat Hi-Flow the mould was vacuum clamped, the machine counter zeroed and the PVSensor system set at 1010 mb. Prior to injection the in mould vacuum reading displayed on the PVSensor systems LCD read 460mb (absolute). The machine was signalled to commence injection and the flow was seen to circumvent the cavity and proceed to fill towards the mould's central vacuum catchpot in the conventional manner. However, the low build up of back pressure was immediately apparent as it slowly increased towards atmospheric pressure. It was only towards the end of the injection with around 80% mould fill, that sufficient back pressure was reached (at the pre-set point of 1010mb) at which point the system throttled the machine's output back to a new slower rate, finally achieving a total mould fill in 210 seconds for 5.8 litres of catalysed resin.

a) after 30 seconds

Polymat Hi-Flow injection process after 120 seconds

b) after 120 seconds

Polymat Hi-Flow injection process after 200 seconds

c)after 200 seconds

Test 2

After cure and release the mould was reloaded using a leading manufacturer's glass mat of the same weight and dimension. No machine or vacuum levels were altered and a second injection made. Within 90 seconds, the back pressure had built up to the set point and the machine slowed. The fill at this stage had only reached 50% and it was very evident that greater resistance was preventing the resin flowing as easily as it had in the previous test. It could be argued that the fibre mat under test this time was less resilient to the mixed vacuum level and as such was squeezed tighter by the flexible mould, thus offering more resistance. However, one would have immediately deduced that had this been the case a lower volume of resin would be needed. Surprisingly 20% more resin was consumed and took over 50% longer to fill the mould (Fill time 460 seconds for 7 litres of catalysed resin.)

The tests were duplicated and each time the same beneficial result for the new Polymat Hi-Flow product was confirmed.

We believe that it is the products unique engineered thermoplastic core, sandwiched between two layers of chopped strand glass fibre that is the key element of its low permeability feature. The core also demonstrates the ability to maintain a high degree of thickness control. It was observed that the surface fibre mat could be compressed into a mould's concave radii with great efficiency, thus reducing resin richness in these zones.

Polymat's success is sure to offer production moulders the opportunity to increase their output considerably by using this product in their existing moulds, as quicker gel times can now be set allowing overall faster cycle times with the same" says Plastech Managing Director Alan Harper.
